ANTONIO MOLINA is one of the National Artist Awardee of the Philippines. He is the first to be conferred of this award during his time. Antonio was born in Quiapo, Manila where he also attended the Escuela Catolica de Nuestro Padre Jesus Nazareno. And college at San Juan De Letran where he was awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1909. Antonio is the son of the founder of the Molina Orchestra and also a government official, Juan Molina.
Molina started to take lessons in violin and solfeggio with Celestino de Vera, one of the members of the Molina Orchestra, at an early age. Then later he became a member of the Molina Orchestra. Antonio Molina utilized Impressionism as his musical style which his compositions creates atmospheric vibes and convey feelings through music. His musical style is known for its revolution from folk music and elements such as:
- application of pentatonic scale and whole tone scale;
- energetic dominanth ninth and eleventh cords;
- usage of linear counterpoints.
Thus his career takes him to be on top with his compositions and granted to be the first to received the National Artist Award (12th June, 1972), and the Conductor of the Year Award (1953) from the Music Lovers' Society, the UP Conservatory Alumni Award ang the Phi Kappa Beta Award (1972).
